25/08/2020Legislation being pushed by Premier Daniel Andrews to extend Victoria’s state of emergency powers by 12 months would continue to "place significant power in the hands of unelected officials", says Victorian Shadow Attorney-General Edward O'Donohue. The Premier is seeking to extend Victoria's state of emergency far beyond the current limit which allows the state government to use extraordinary powers for up to six months.
Mr O’Donohue said “it’s time that the parliament was included in this process and Victorians had democracy restored”. Premier Andrews' unprecedented move ultimately seeks to “extend the centralisation of power” allowed under emergency conditions, he said. “Twelve months is simply unacceptable. “At a time when numbers of the virus are coming down in Victoria, Victorians want to know what the roadmap is back to normality.
