New research by the University of SA shows children who warrant out-of-home care, but are returned home, are at the highest risk of premature death.

"Children can go into care for a period while [investigators] gather more information, [or] while the parents have an opportunity to demonstrate they can provide a safe environment for that child," she said.

Child protection services exist within the Department of Child Protection, SA Health and the South Australian Police. Professor Segal said while the system was good at identifying at-risk families, there needed to be more services and training so child protection staff could work across disciplines and agencies.

"And working with a family is also important because where a child is part of the family and it's safe for them to stay part of a family, then you want that family dynamic to be working better."Professor Segal said the study also revealed that cause of death records rarely included family situations.

Of the 1,635 deaths of children under 16 studied over 30 years, only two were coded, or categorised, to include child maltreatment as a cause of death, despite evidence of abuse and neglect appearing more often in coronial and police reports. "They were very responsive to our concerns and were looking at how they might work with the different agencies to ensure that the coders get more information and incorporate these child maltreatment codes where they were appropriate."In a statement, the Department of Child Protection said it was committed to changing the trajectory of long-term adverse health, social and economic outcomes for children who experienced mistreatment.

$500 million in SA alone set aside to battle the issues when a bunch of gronks can irresponsibly have children? Imagine if those funds could be allocated elsewhere.

And we call ourselves humans.

And who’s fault is that.

Government encouraged bad people to have kids when they see they get free money for just having them

So child protective services aren't doing their job then?

Our class system, racism, bigotry, all direct opportunity and prosperity to those who are born iintoa world if entitlement. The children spoken of here will never be allowed to prosper. NEVER.

Yet they hand many children to known abusers and DV offenders, ignoring expert testimony, and ignoring the fears of parents. I often wonder of they ever reflect on the poor decision making they enter into, that ends in dead or harmed children.
