The last person to see a prospecting couple alive in remote WA five years ago remains a suspect in the death of the man down a mine shaft and the disappearance of his wife.

The court heard the butts were first seen on April 8, 2015, when Mr Kehlet's remains were found, but they were not seized by police until May 7.

Mr Nelson said a post mortem examination had failed to ascertain the cause of Mr Kehlet's death, saying his body was in an advanced, but uneven, state of decomposition. Mr Nelson said Ms Kehlet had told a friend they were planning to abseil down old mine shafts to look for gold. Mr Nelson said the inquest would examine how their campsite was set up and plans the group had made about prospecting in an area referred to"the three million dollar patch".
