Max Gordon-Hall, a resident of the NSW town of Batlow, rushed back from an overseas holiday to find his home had been destroyed by bushfire.

Residents have begun assessing the damage in the New South Wales town of Batlow after a bushfire tore through over the weekend.Batlow resident Max Gordon-Hall was overseas during the fires and returned to find only ruinAnother resident says locals banded together to put out sheds and fences and save homes

One man died and locals fear around 20 homes were destroyed, although this number has not been confirmed."Holy mackerel. All that work for nothing," he said.The paramedic said he moved into the three-bedroom house only six months ago after renovating it."The firies were here trying to put it out apparently. What do you do, save 10 houses and lose one, or save one and lose 10? Rather mine burn down and keep the neighbours.
