Since Olive Donnellan first put up her hand to run in the first Territory council election in 1947, women have been following in her footsteps.

"A few prominent examples would be Lyn Berlowitz [Independent] who was the first elected woman for Fannie Bay in 1960, Dawn Lawrie [Independent] was the only female parliamentarian who served both on legislative council and then the legislative assembly, and Liz Andrews [CLP] was the first female cabinet member among many others," he said.

Clare Martin's shock win in the 2001 Northern Territory election catapulted her into the spotlight as not only the first female Chief Minister but also the first time the Labor Party had won since self-government.Former chief minister of the Northern Territory, Clare Martin talks to the press. "There was a change in 2001, but it had been built on the back of women who worked hard and who were very effective," she said.

Ms Martin was pleased with the number of women who had decided to run in this year's election, but was concerned at the tactic of placing women in unwinnable seats. "I looked around in town and didn't think the quality of representation was as good as it should have been," she said.
