The teacher and YouTube star says the COVID-19 pandemic has given him a whole new appreciation for his fellow teachers.

Eddie Woo is a seasoned teacher and YouTube sensation with more than 64,000,000 video views, but 2020 might have served up his toughest audience yet: his own children.The channel now has more than 1 million subscribersSpeaking with Kurt Fearnley on ABC's One Plus One, the maths teacher revealed that he — like many parents across the country — struggled at times with coronavirus-prompted distance learning.

"Something which looks as simple as teaching someone how to read is deeply profound and complicated," he told Kurt Fearnley.In a classroom, he's like a "duck to water" but for Eddie, the parent-child dynamic made home education a little tougher. "If there's one lesson which I think every parent can take on … it's to be a co-learner with your child," he said.Maths teacher Eddie Woo says it's important parents aren't too hard on themselves when it comes to home learning.

It's this difference in resourcing and support that has Eddie concerned about what happens when "regular" school resumes.Coranavirus distancing measures mean many students have made the switch to school online. Eddie's hopeful that the 2020 experience might prompt real change in the Australian education system.
