The Morrison government is considering invoking a biosecurity law that would make it a criminal offence for Australians stranded in India to return home.

Health Minister Greg Hunt may enact a section of the nation’s biosecurity laws to make it an offence to travel from “high risk” countries like India, a government source has told SBS News.It would apply to anyone who has been in a high risk country in the past 14 days.'We missed her first steps': India flight ban crushes ‘hope’ of Australian parents separated from baby daughter

India on Thursday recorded another 3,645 COVID-19 deaths - a new record for the country - and registered almost 380,000 cases in 24 hours. The move to consider legal sanctions come after two Australian cricketers managed to return home after the travel ban was put in place by transiting through Doha. When Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the travel suspension on Monday he said it would not be possible for people to transit through third country airports.Mr Morrison, Mr Hunt and Immigration Minister Alex Hawke have all refused to rule out longer suspension of travel arrangements between the two countries, beyond the 15 May deadline.

Well done Mr Morrison! Do not let the media etc use the ‘compassionate’ word to make you feel guilty. Your job is to protect Australia first & that means to make tough hard decisions that is based on logic & facts. They will thank you later. I thank you now !

Would that be the same biosecurity law that could not be used to stop Ruby Princess passengers dispersing like startled sheep?

Maybe they could work on better quarantine regulations instead. You know, something productive. Another example of wanting to punish through legislation, rather than actually lead. Have a real solution. Or show fellow Australians they are worth the f*cking effort.

Wow Excellent Scotty! They Got 1 year and 2 months to be back. and Nothing Happens. Sometimes we need Tough Leadership. What happens if they are back and We have Lockdowns 5.0 6.0 7.0 ? Banks and Small Businesses will fail. We must Protect our Country!

Fuck Australia its people are sheep be more free when China invades

The people of this nation should be truly grateful that they do not have to experience the grief and suffering that other nations are at the moment due to COVID-19. I am happy to be protected. I work in the health care system and what is happening in India terrifies me.

On paper, we are dictatorial and totalitarian.

ScottMorrisonMP showing his compassion to Aussies stranded. Just say what you really want to say “fuck all of you” just go ahead and say it, India or any other country you truely don’t give a fuck. I hope your family ends up in this situation. I pray they do. Your not Christian.

The blatant stupidity of that idea is... those who do return...are safer here than in India

What is wrong with this government! We’re heading for the ‘Dark Ages’ at light years’ speed! ScottMorrisonMP are you listening, soon to be ex Murdoch Errand Boy!

Int arrivals should: -Not be allowed in the terminal -Exit the plane via stairs -Portable passport scanner on the tarmac -Buses waiting on the tarmac to bus them directly to air gapped quarantine facilities on the edge of cities. Collect luggage there OR masks in airports

This variant won't stay in India. It will go everywhere. So does that mean nobody from anywhere gets into Australia? Its well and truly time to house all arrivals in Howard Springs type air gapped quarantine facilities & all HCWs across Australia have top PPE

According to the media 4500 Australians left for India between January and March this year. How was the government to get them back before Christmas when more than half left after

What if they are tambourine-bashing hillsong morons? Surely they would get a free pass?

It’s going to be an extremely difficult situation. On one hand they should be home. On the other hand if the mutated Indian strains brought in & spread here, it would be devastating to every Australian here. So the decision should be based on minority vs majority.

I think it's going too far

Truly ridiculous

Well, that's one way to not handle it

naveenjrazik So that means Morrison and the liberal party all get booted out of Australia!!

This is straight away outrageous and low. Which government abandons its own citizens? Is this Australia or Myanmar.

Would ScottytheRacist have implemented this outrageous law if the country in question was eg … UK, US, or a European nation? I believe not… auspol

Why? Every other quarantine question has been (falsely) called a 'matter for the states' by ScottyFromMarketing FederalQuarantine ScottyDoesNothing

This ausgov just keeps sinking to new lows...

There is no need. They are CITIZENS and should be allowed to come home

Will that law also apply to 🇦🇺cricketers?🙄

Surely it’s illegal to make a citizen stateless?

Are we talking about a democratic nation signatory of the Declaration of Human Rights?

It’s almost like the government had too much power..

Indian travel ban headed to court as Australian man files challenge to rulesAn Australian man lodges a Federal Court challenge to the government's ban on travel from India, arguing it is illegal on constitutional grounds. Let’s hope Australia’s judiciary branch makes the out of control executive branch and the enabling legislative branch responsible for their many shortcomings ... the threatening of jail time for the crime of returning to your country of citizenship being the peak of the iceberg. obviously he got money The lawyers alone would cost $40k The whole travel ban for coming in and out of Australia needs to be challenged. By the time this gets a ruling the ban would be lifted but if the whole travel ban was lifted it wont happen again
