One woman couldn't buy second hand uni books. She abandoned a nursing placement after being blocked from buying a stethoscope online. She says was told she couldn't buy from that site as it sold hand sanitiser, a restricted item due to its alcohol content.

it was "difficult to conclude" where social harm had been reduced due to a "lack of robustness in data collection". New independent studies from the University of South Australia into the trials of the card are set to be completed by the end of the year.

But 2500 kilometres south-west in Ceduna, a town of 3400 on the edge of the Nullarbor, South Australian Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council chief executive Scott Wilson, who oversees the Stepping Stones centre,in the number of people coming to the clinic for treatment. People on the cards strongly grasp the punitive dimensions of it and they sort of express that they feel like they're being punished. But Rowan Ramsey, the federal Liberal member for Grey, which covers Ceduna, says the most recent figures he's seen show "the levels of intoxication for those entering [the local drug and alcohol centre] are a lot lower."

"Being on drugs stops you getting a job. It's that simple. Losing all your money to gambling means you can't put food on your table for your kids," he says. "This is just looking at a real situation and being honest about it." Dr Eve Vincent, an anthropology lecturer at Macquarie University, lived in Ceduna for three months as part of a Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research study into the cashless welfare card program.

NO WAY!! Not on my watch! Have just sent Donna a brand new stethoscope & Conni ‘pickpocket’ & popped $500 in to her acct for books. She’s divine & wanted to pay it back, but instead made her promise to pay it forward to another nursing battler when she can. Good luck Donna!☺️❤️🐪

AdamBandt Disgusting

lizoluwi How great is this ridiculous endue card stops a person from education

Disgusting, Politicians spend millions on travel and office fit outs with less scrutiny

How insulting it all is.

prudinx So people can't buy mouthwash? It has an alcohol content.

AdamBandt Why would she need to buy her own stethoscope? Does she have to supply her own bandages and drugs too? I'm against the food stamps but I call bullshit on this story.

They are going to need to go into crime and drug trafficking. They are already into prostitution, just like students. What a lovely country.

AdamBandt Can she still purchase the world's smallest violin?

Yes but think about all the women who will now have enough money to feed their babies and children.

Boo hoo. Can’t get Qantas FF points for crack deals.

vanbadham Watch Indue’s response time lengthen to intolerable as its rollout spreads.

hand sanitiser...this damn country's gone mad

What an absolute disgrace! Such a stupid idea and Scomo refuses to acknowledge this cashless card doesn't work! Doesn't he have something better to do than pick on people who are trying to study? Can't stand the man.

So this woman was going to become a nurse but now she can’t because the government thinks she won’t be able to find work if she’s drunk on hand sanitiser

1petermartin No system is perfect.

nobby15 If you have a look at the undue site they have a link to approved Business 69 pages Most are liquor outlets

Sillier and sillier

Another botched government innovation! Shame on the damn libs!!

Calling mayo on this story. For this to be correct sanitiser & mouth wash would be excluded for purchase at a supermarket. Post a video of it happening and I’ll happily apologise.

nerdsgrail These restrictions are even more ridiculous than I imagined. Why is it that a conservative government is making big government interfere with so many people's lives? auspol

Have an unemployed friend and we've made plans to do grocery shopping together in the event she is put on this card. She'll pay for my goods on the card and I'll reimburse her with cash. Hopefully she has a job before this

Seriously JacquiLambie Senator_Patrick How the hell are people supposed to 'get ahead' with this rubbish happening auspol Newstart

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed the card disproportionately affects women?

RichardTuffin Sounds like home detention

I've got lots of nursing gear but would happily purchase this person a new stethoscope if details could be provided please

This cashless card is not the way to go- it’s another form of control over people. Do they think people will drink hand sanitizer? It’s so stupid! I’d like to see the pollies survive using this system first

The Cashless Card 💳 with all of its restrictions is preventing vulnerable Australian people from getting themselves out of the poverty cycle !!! Because of a few, the majority are being penalised and disadvantaged - and being kept a prisoner of the poverty cycle!!

Send me address and I’ll organise stethoscope xx

beneltham How good's the welfare card... fckin ripper, mate. Screw this government.

Did she try another site?

FatherBob May they rot in the *hell* they've created. Nobody should have to go through this torment. Where's the mental health support for those who suffer clinical depression brought on by loss of employment & often a safe place to sleep? MPs take note YoureEmployedbythePeople AusPol

LouiseBeaston Country is fcuked:-(

Pathetic, some people are just hopeless.

FatherBob How can we help her

No sanitizer Get Fucked

jurylady5 What a lid of rubbish.

_Mattie_Love That is so fkn racist it makes me sick to the stomach

JaneCaro .ACurrentAffair9 why don’t you do a story on people like this and the card

KleinRevd How are 'cashless welfare cards' any different from the United State's dehumanizing 'food stamps' program? The LNP is trying to reform our welfare on a scale never done before in this country, they didn't take it to an election, and it's not getting proper scrutiny. auspol

So this what the LNP meant by 'Have a go, get a go' then? Preventing someone getting a job in nursing, where we have staff shortages because the stupid welfare system won't allow them to purchase essential equipment. 😡

Daffodilh3 Yes you reporters at the Age...start printing all the hardships caused by this indue card...

boomerangmadi Forbidden merchants for Indue CDC users: Australia Post, Catch, eBay, Grays Online, Groupon, Kogan, Scoopon, Woolworths Online. Places where you can pay bills, buy groceries, and stretch the budget with cheaper prices. But nope, not those we are supporting in a period of need.

Who the f*ck is drinking hand sanitiser This govt is next level incompetent

Well sure, who hasn't been so desperate for a drink that they chugged hand sanitiser? Anyone?

She abandoned a nursing placement because she couldn't but a stethoscope on line? Sounds like a pathetic excuse to me. If that was all that was stopping her studying she obviously wasn't going to be determined enough to see the course through anyway.

If you really wanted to help people with addiction problems you’d put more money into welfare programs instead of being petty and humiliating people. If only we held big business and politicians to the standards we try to impose on everyday Australians.

Hand sanitiser, eh? Well surely that would eliminate buying from the major retailers? What a load of bull...Indue auspol

TAFE should teach life skills .... like getaway driving and the going rate at the local Fencer for plasma screens.

Ive seen stethoscopes on ebay guess didnt try other options for purchasing or the nursing career didn't mean that much

She wasn’t trying too hard

I'll add these to the ShitThatNeverHappened file.

Water vapour find means 'super-Earth' planet K2-18b could support life | Sky News AustraliaWater vapour has been discovered in the atmosphere of an enormous Earth-like planet already known to have habitable temperatures, which scientists say means it could support life.\n\nThe unprecedented detection was made on K2-18b, which is eight times the mass of our home world.\n\nIt is known as an exoplanet because it orbits a star outside the solar system, and is the first of its kind that is known to feature both water and temperatures suitable for life to exist.\n\nThose hoping to jump ship will be disappointed to hear that K2-18b is a whopping 110 light years from Earth, and may also have been exposed to dangerous radiation due to its highly active red dwarf star.\n\nUCL researchers who made the discovery on K2-18b remain excited by the potential implications of their find because they say it brings us closer to knowing whether Earth is truly unique.\n\nThe study was published in the journal Nature Astronomy.\n\nImage: ESA\u002FHubble, M.
