Blackmores chief executive Alastair Symington says the best advice he ever received was from former Olympic basketballer Lindsay Gaze.

I get up at about 4.30. Most mornings I do something physical. At the moment I am doing high-intensity training three mornings a week, normally at around 5.15am. When you get close to 50 it’s important to do some weight-bearing exercise and get the heart rate up. It’s something I can do for 45 to 50 minutes. I get home at about 6, and then I like to take the dog for a walk for about 30 to 40 minutes and clear my head. I try to empty my mind as much as I possibly can.

I played a lot of basketball as a young sportsman. I applied to the Melbourne Tigers basketball club and I remember at the age of 16 Lindsay sat me down. I was one of these up and coming stars at Melbourne. Until that point, my entire career was based in Australia. When I moved to Singapore in 2008, for the first time I was asked to lead a very diverse leadership group. The office had many different nationalities and it was really for the first time I saw the power of cognitive, ethnic and gender diversity coming into play.I got taught that you always seek to understand before being understood, and that’s something that I’ve taken with me throughout my career. The most important thing is attitude.

The communication skills come down to clarity of thought and a clear communication style, and being as transparent as you possibly can.I think the thing that I miss about travel the most is actually that time spent on planes being able to gather your thoughts.

Free market is not god-given right, international business chief warnsThe private sector needs to do more to convince the world it’s a force for good, according to the Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce John Denton. A pity he's used the term 'convince', which to a lot of corporate concerns would simply translate to 'marketing' & employing further deceptive practice, rather than transparent acts towards responsible stewardship of public resources & structures towards building ethical wealth?
