Writers Meg Mason and Kate Gibbs first spied each other at a university tutorial and knew they would become close. Becoming mothers at different times tested their connection – but not for long. | THE TWO OF US

Food writer Kate Gibbs , 44, and author Meg Mason, 43, knew they would become close when they first spied each other at a university tutorial. Becoming mothers at different times tested their connection – but only momentarily.

For the first time, I felt she didn’t really understand my life. But she was always reassuring. One day we were on my sofa, me in tears of exhaustion. She was helping me fold laundry and held up one of those tiny, newborn singlets and just said “Look, look!” with a smile, and I knew she meant, “Look what you have, look how lucky you are.” When she returned to Australia a few months later, I was devastated. She was my home outside my husband and child.

In 2016, when we sold our house in Balmain and were renting while looking to buy a new place, she let us stay in her apartment. It was comforting to be in her home after moving around so much. Hers is a practical generosity, and always a little bit more than it needs to be: she didn’t just lend us the apartment, she also left us a bottle of champagne. My mum is in New Zealand and I don’t have a sister. Kate has been like my mum and my sister, as well as my friend, for years.

Why we wanted the Prime Minister to say ‘I’m sorry’Apologies assure others that you value a certain standard and acknowledge that you have not done enough to meet it. Resign is a better word. Paul Keating On the Liberal’s Remember Howard's apology to the stolen generation? Yeah me neither. The Right Wing struggle with sorry, it's strange, they expect it of others.
