Former Labor candidate Sam Crosby says the ATAR system is harmful because it “encourages universities to make a false assumption' that a kid who gets 99 is smarter than a kid who gets 98.

Former Labor candidate Sam Crosby says the ATAR system is harmful because it “encourages universities to make a false assumption" that a kid who gets 99 is smarter than a kid who gets 98. In any given year, between 150,000 and 190,000 students sit the HSC. Many of these are assigned an ATAR – a universities admissions rank that sorts them into their minute bands of 0.05. These marks then determine the courses that they can study.

Mr Crosby proposed capping the ATAR scores so universities are more inclined to consider the soft skills of students: sport, drama, music, debate, volunteering, and leadership. “I'm proposing that we start to think about capping the marks given out – so that the maximum mark is capped at 95.” Mr Crosby said. “With automation and artificial intelligence on the rise, the jobs of the future will depend on human qualities that are not easily reduced to a single number,” he said.
