Accountability in modern politics 'questionable' if 'Andrews remains' in his position | Sky News AustraliaPolitical consultant Jim Middleton has questioned the meaning of “accountability” in “modern politics” as Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews remains in his position of authority after claiming to be accountable for errors in the hotel quarantine system. \n\nThe Premier vowed he would bear responsibility for any mistakes that were identified in investigating Melbourne’s hotel quarantine bungle which sparked a severe uptick in the state’s coronavirus caseload. \n\n“We know mistakes were made, if he’s accountable, to put it bluntly, why is [Andrews] still there,” Mr Middleton told Sky News. \n\n“We’ve seen ministers in the Victorian government go for issues like branch stacking but I don’t recall ministers across Australia being dismissed or standing down for matters of substance.” \n\n“The idea of having a standard ministerial office as we understood it under the Westminster system has disappeared.”\n\nHe said he expected the question of responsibility for mistakes made would be focused on about five ministers in the Andrews government.\n\n“But in fact all the real decisions were being made or should have been made out of the Premier’s office,” he said. \n\nImage: Getty \n\n DanielAndrewsMP Exactly right, if he's 'accountable' then why is he still in his job? This is just like 'the buck stops with me' until his own party steals money to win an election, then suddenly 'it's not my fault!' ArrestDictatorDan DanielAndrewsMP Ruby Dutton? Frydenberg lashes Victorian Labor govt saying 'it should never have got to this' | Sky News AustraliaTreasurer Josh Frydenberg has criticised the Victoria government's handling of hotel quarantine, which led to the state's second wave of coronavirus, saying there were 'no doubt' mistakes made. \n\nMr Frydenberg agreed with fellow Victorian and Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar the issue in Victoria was 'not simply bad luck' but poor leadership.\n\n'As a Victorian, I feel so devastated about what has transpired in our state. It should never have got to this,' he said.\n\n'What happened in quarantine were significant failures that cannot be repeated.\n\n'We're in a state of crisis right now. The emotional toll on Victorian families, on women who are trying to hold down a job and homeschool their kids, on grandparents not seeing their kids, on businesses having to close their doors.' \n\nMr Frydenberg rejected the assertion the onus was on the government to hold Premier Daniel Andrews to account over the state's failings to contain the virus, but rather to continue providing the necessary support to the businesses and individuals.\n\n'I'll let Daniel Andrews explain what happened on quarantine. That's for him to explain. That's for him to account for, but there is no doubt mistakes have been made,' he said.\n\n'You might want a slinging match in the media and you may think that may make for good headlines, but I'm focused on delivering for Victorians.'\n\nMr Frydenberg said he welcomed further funding from the states as the federal government increased its spending through the expansion of JobKeeper.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia JoshFrydenberg So he does realise that it was Scott Morrison's suggested security company from an approved list of providers?
