A teenage boy is dead and another is critical after a car with five people on board slammed into a tree on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

The Mazda CX3 hit the tree at the intersection of Marshall Road and Field Road in Tootgarook, about 80km south of Melbourne, about 1.15am.Another 17-year-old boy from Capel Sound was taken to hospital in a critical condition, while a third 17-year-old boy was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The driver of the car, a 21-year-old Rye man, and a 17-year-old passenger from Capel Sound were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.Anyone with information or who witnessed the crash is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
