Paul 'Jock' Palfreeman has unexpectedly been granted parole after serving 11 years in a Bulgarian prison for murder

for fatally stabbing Bulgarian law student Andrei Monov, 23, after a brawl with a gang in the capital, Sofia, in 2007.

"Of course he's not actually out yet, so we're still waiting for that to happen, but this decision can't be appealed so it's a very good decision for Jock." Mr McFarland said the case had been filled with "ups and downs", with Palfreeman denied parole just two months ago, on July 17. Elizabeth Tsitsos, an Australian lawyer who deals with international parole matters, said that it would be "unlikely" for Palfreeman to return to Australia during his parole period.
