Comment: Sydney Uni's proposed changes to the Ramsay Centre's Western civilisation degree should be a rescue rope for the controversial course. But they're more likely to bring it to an end before it even starts, writes Salvatore Babones

Australia's two-year battle over its Western heritage may be entering its final phase. On Wednesday, thea revamped bid to join the universities of Queensland and Wollongong in offering a Ramsay Centre degree, or major, or something in Western civilisation.

The Sydney offering would not be a degree, and it would not immerse students in Western civ. Instead, it would repackage existing offerings into a new arts-style major in the "Western tradition". It would consist of two new first-year seminars focused on ''great books'' plus a choice of five electives chosen from an a la carte menu.

That's practical, pragmatic, and clearly intended to throw the Ramsay Centre a rescue rope. The Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation opened two years ago with a bulging wallet and a proposal to fund "elite but not elitist" degrees centred on the reading of great books in small seminars with leading intellectuals.Thanks to the generosity of the late healthcare magnate Paul Ramsay, it''generations of young Australians will ...

Its financial benefactor, the Paul Ramsay Foundation, became increasingly worried about the bad press surrounding what was supposed to be a prestige educational program., with the Ramsay Centre receiving a promise of continued funding if, and only if it showed success in signing universities up to its Western civ degrees. At that point only Wollongong was on board, and even that agreement looked shaky.
