Sydney is admired by the world but let down by high costs, bad nightlife and lack of narrative | michaelkoziol

Sydney is selling itself short as a destination for global business, entrepreneurs and fun-hungry tourists, and lacks a narrative about itself, according to a major piece of research examining the city's strengths and weaknesses.

The Committee for Sydney said these declines were partly cyclical. But it also found multinational companies have "a relatively lean presence" in Sydney and "do not drive or catalyse as many jobs wider corporate and services economy as in other cities". Very few international tourists nominated nightlife among their reasons for visiting Sydney, and the number of 15-29 year old tourists increased only 2 per cent last year. Visitors in the 30-39 and 50+ age groups leapt by closer to 6 per cent, according to Destination NSW."Probably the biggest negative perception Sydney faces with its trust brand is that it doesn't have a thriving nightlife," Mr Metcalf said. "That has shown up in international perceptions about Sydney.

michaelkoziol I mean you’re not wrong

michaelkoziol Over-development and traffic a drag on Sydney. Major inhibitor to making this city tolerable. Even with drought, Australian country towns present a more enjoyable life alternative. I live in Sydney but cannot leave due to family commitments

michaelkoziol Well you can’t have everything 🙄

michaelkoziol I grew up in Sydney. You realise as you get older that successive govts have let the city down, and it's not as 'good' as you think it is. Could have been SO much better with a bit of progressive forethought, instead of negative reactionary plans.

michaelkoziol Inner East property owners objection to all night hours have ruined it.......too few ...have way too much power....if they dont like the visitors to their over priced ghettos. ..move out.....disgusting greedy bastards......lift the ban

michaelkoziol Take the harbour and beaches away and it’s just a disconnected city with crap transport and no soul

michaelkoziol Sydney's truly a basket case. The embodiment of Australia's crass 'where the bloody hell are you' arrogance. Give me Melbourne any day, or night.

michaelkoziol GladysB killing Sydney .... have you been to Melbourne lately those city kicks our butts big time as much as I hate to admit Melbourne is a far better city than Sydney now

michaelkoziol Pathetic funding for hospitals and schools

michaelkoziol What does a lack of narrative mean?

michaelkoziol Oh that same nightlife that you fought against!?

michaelkoziol Mick Taylor has a narrative ..

michaelkoziol And a Liberal Party fascist authoritarian government in both state and federal.

michaelkoziol And Government

michaelkoziol If as you say the world admires Sydney then who is it a let down to? Which other planet?Galaxy? You could always move michaelkoziol smh

michaelkoziol That’s what happens under a Liberal government

michaelkoziol It’s a dirty grubby town with not much to offer except views of the bridge & Opera house. Look at Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam so much more to see and do. Good night life. Sydney has a sleazy area you call the Cross. auspol

michaelkoziol OMG, Sydney lacks narrative! I blame the government, no climate change whatever.

michaelkoziol Whinge whinge, we all still live here and love it!

michaelkoziol I know, the cost of drinks is ridiculous these days innit.

michaelkoziol To many New South Welshmen not helping

michaelkoziol Costs for everything will get higher once the GladysB Govt sells NSW

michaelkoziol Apart from the harbour there isn’t much to see - most of what is good about Sydney happens when you leave it

michaelkoziol You forgot astronomical non sensical house prices

michaelkoziol Here is the narrative for Sydney. ‘We are a city full of wankers obsessed with money and housing.’

michaelkoziol .....and overpopulation.

michaelkoziol and lack of narrative, lol.

michaelkoziol As well as pathetic public transport

michaelkoziol Tell us something new?

michaelkoziol and too many homeless

How I'd improve Sydney: We need to think of ourselves as united, not dividedComment: There is an inherent competitiveness to our city and our personality which has created an east versus west mentality Great. How about fairfax locates some journalists out here in the west to write articles about what's going on out here? You might even increase your readership Sydney is different from Melbourne or most cities as no other city is built on a stunning harbour with gorgeous beaches north and south. Of course this creates divides. You’re overthinking it.
