The sudden departure of Paul Broad at the government-owned hydropower giant comes in the middle of construction of the huge Snowy 2.0 project which is over budget and late.

The sudden departure of the veteran executive, 70, who has led the federal government-owned Snowy since 2013, comes in the middle ofSnowy Hydro CEO Paul Broad has been leading the hydropower giant since 2013.

“The government values Snowy Hydro and its critical role in supporting a changing grid,” the spokeswoman said. Snowy Hydro chairman David Knox said the change of government had meant “new thinking coming in” that Snowy has been adapting to, and pointed to the challenge of meeting the requirements to use green hydrogen at Kurri Kurri,

Mr Knox also noted the “extremely challenging” last few months for Snowy when it was required to run its plants almost as baseload generators.The board will now commence a process to find a new chief executive, with chief operating officer Roger Whitby – described as “a safe pair of hands” by Mr Knox – to lead the company on an interim basis.
