Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton is in Sri Lanka after a boat carrying 20 people was reportedly intercepted en-route to Australia.

The Department of Home Affairs is investigating reports up to six boats attempted to illegally arrive in Australia. Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton is in Sri Lanka to deal with the issue.

His visit comes a week after a vessel carrying 20 Sri Lankans was intercepted off Christmas Island. Liberal Senator Jim Molan, the architect of Operation Sovereign Borders, says 'if you weaken border control, you will get a rush of people smuggling boats risking the lives of people on board'.
