Marise Payne has dismissed speculation Australia’s focus on the Pacific could be a plan to out-do China’s influence in the region.

The Foreign Affairs Minister has told Sky News ‘our focus is on a secure, prosperous and safe Indo-Pacific’. Ms Payne says the Pacific has seen enormous growth in recent years, including ‘growth and strength from the economic power of China’, changing the region ‘in a positive way’.

She says the Asian Development Bank estimates an almost $46 billion requirement for infrastructure support between 2019 and 2030. ‘Where we can make a constructive contribution, then Australia is more than willing and able to do so,’ she says. Her remarks come as Prime Minister Scott Morrison visits the Solomon Islands, where he is due to announce a $250 million infrastructure programme for the region.
