.corybernardi on Labor’s border security policy: Labor have had a myriad of positions over successive elections ... I don’t believe Labor has changed its mind, I think they're doing it for political expediency’s point of view. MORE: pmlive

Labor's new Shadow Minister for Home Affairs Kristina Keneally has been forced to retract comments she made about border security. In an interview recorded in 2015, Senator Keneally said she disliked boat turnbacks, describing them as 'cruel'.

Senator Keneally, who has been elevated to the Home Affairs and Immigration Ministry in Anthony Albanese’s shadow frontbench, has since backtracked, saying turnbacks are essential. Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has slammed the Senator, saying there is no one in the Labor caucus ‘less qualified’ to take on the immigration portfolio.
