COMMENT | How come the majority of dogs (not me!) agree to fetch the ball once it is thrown? Shockingly, this can happen some 20 or 30 times in a row. It just reinforces this inappropriate human behaviour.

It’s your dog, Clancy, writing from my home in the city, where everything remains quite peculiar. For example, the most common game in the local park is an activity which I call “Watch As I Throw Away Your Stuff.”

It’s at this point that the human leans down, grabs the ball from the fiercely reluctant dog ... and throws it away once more.If we wanted you to throw the ball, why would we so strenuously refuse to give it up? Why would we growl and clamp down on the ball and give ourselves whiplash trying to maintain possession?Even weirder, how come the majority of dogs agree to fetch the item once it is thrown? Shockingly, this can happen some 20 or 30 times in a row.

Many dogs, quite correctly, treat these mullygrubbers with the contempt they deserve. The humans are left to stomp off and retrieve the ball themselves. This at least gives some innocent amusement to those of us in the cheap seats.
