Volunteers who worked through Saturday night to save a stranded pilot whale near Hobart were continuing the battle on Sunday morning.

Members of the public and Parks and Wildlife Marine Conservation staff began helping the beached pilot whale at Kingston about 4:00pm Saturday. It then became stranded again at Opposum Bay, where residents have managed to guide it offshore. The Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment spokesman Warwick Brennan said it was not known what caused the mammal to beach itself.

"But the fact it is an animal that is normally found in pods, the fact that it is on its own and also up the River Derwent, it does appear that there could be something wrong with it. Pilot whales are common around Tasmania's coastline but Mr Brennan said it was unusual to see one so far up the River Derwent.

Whales beaching themselves to avoid being eaten by Great Whites is only natural.

wild animals die all the time from natural causes ..every whale ..polar bear etc. that dies is not a globaal warming event ..but only the normal people know that.

It's called natural selection, stop this garbage, you are not helping anyone.

Just open the valve and let the 3 tones of water back out......oops, sorry, wrong story!

How a 3-tonne inflatable whale is teaching people to help with mass strandingsTasmania is a hotspot for mass whale strandings. Mark is the life-size, custom-made inflatable whale helping local communities learn how to deal with these events. At least an inflatable whale won’t smack the left side of your face through the right as you work near its tail. All you really need is Keisha Castle-Hughes to jump on one of them and they’ll all go back out to sea. 👍
