OPINION: Rewarding participation in junior sport doesn't make kids soft, it makes them come back

So here we are in the grip of a global pandemic, a time when the abandonment of junior sport and enforced home learning have created the enormous challenge of keeping children motivated, active and healthy.

Or, at local sports clubs, as we emerge from lockdowns, seldom has there been greater opportunity for energetic volunteers to demonstrate their value to their communities. Under the headline "Everyone's a winner but our kids lose out", the newspaper enlists the testimony of a child psychologist, an ex-NRL player and a parent to perpetuate the unproven theory that giving participation certificates to kids aged from five to seven years-old represents "a mollycoddling approach to school sports where everyone wins".

How about recognise participation but reward excelling. Isn't this more in line with how society works as a whole?

You don’t make the connection between everyone gets balloon childhoods and the current rates of unemployment, shit entitlement behaviour and depression in millennial’s?

At a time like this you feel the need to write a story like this. What do you hope to gain but turn kids and parents off sport. There’s no harm In recognising that they participated. To remind kids that people respect their effort.

They grow up with a sense of entitlement.

It removes the shine from performance based trophies & ribbons which dulls the would-be achievers’ motivation. Participation awards have always been lame. No child cherishes one. A team photo, framed? Sure. That’s a memory reminder of good times. A reward for showing up? Lame.
