There has been considerable media debate around suppression vs elimination with commentary from epidemiologists and business leaders.
In fact, I am writing this from hotel quarantine after exposure to a presymptomatic colleague who caught COVID-19, most likely via community transmission.Dr Aaron Bloch is in hotel quarantine after a colleague contracted coronavirus. From my own perspective — widely shared by my colleagues — suppression cannot win.
But we are human. At the core of our humanity is the desire for touch and intimacy. Who hasn't hugged someone in the past three months? Who hasn't slipped at least once in their social distancing as the threat appeared to recede? Try as we might, natural instincts will break through. Once is all it takes.
This time around, our stocks of PPE, medicine and ventilators are bolstered, but our physical and emotional resilience is depleted.
We in Victoria have had the strictest lockdown since March, yet we still can’t control the spread of this virus. All other states have except for us.
Misleading headline. If it's about the policy for medical workers, write a headline that reflects. 'Frontline' has been used for anything from police to shelf stockers. A headline that implies a failure of strategy overall where the article isn't about that is dishonest.
Can't find exactly who this Bloch guy is...guess it's hard to get a real time photo of him cause he's in lockdown
yes, you only have to look at the list of health care workers who have died in the UK because of this - it is staggering I have great respect for these health care workers who struggle with incorrect equipment - hope it changes soon
Thanks ABC I just wasted 5 mins of my life reading nothing. Suppression doesn't work. Ok. Elimination? You're joking.
For suppression to work you need to decide who will receive the treatment & who won't. It's unethical & cruel but how else can we keep our health system going? In other countries like ElSalvador hundreds of Drs have lost their lives. Many are awaiting plasma transfers
I would not agree with him that Victoria is one of the more cautious states.
What does an effective elimination strategy look like?
Strange he did not mention the Dan Andrews private security guard sex party as the reason Vic is fucked. We were doing fine in NSW until you muppets turned up. Keep your advise to yourselves and see if you can get daily cases below 200. Baby steps for you muppets.
I worked in infectious diseases areas & took the Standard and Specific Precautions without catching diseases. I would suggest that it is a failure to follow strict protocols that is leading to health workers contracting the virus. Health workers need to work in a deliberate way.
Appalled that a VIC nurse I know told me that even with covid patients they still only need to wear a surgical mask! I mean seriously? N95 masks for all medical staff working directly with covid patients please! Too much evidence of air borne transmission.
What they been putting in the NSW water?
It's failed ng everyone we need to stop this culture of separation.
Pandemic is over CDC reports.
Words are cheap. So you want an elimination strategy bit offer no clues how you might achieve this. We all would love elimination but most of us don’t live in lala land and understand we will need to live with COVID.
Wake up Australia. The is a hoax plandemic.
Supression won’t work. I have said it so many times. Just print the money out and send to all people affected by strict lockdown to help them pay rents and mortgage. Toughen laws for those who lie and flouting rules. For mths, we will be back to normal. GladysB ScottMorrisonMP
Fatality rate is tiny. The overwhelmingly majority either don’t know they have/had it and dont get sick or have a mild flu. This doctor should be ashamed of himself. For the few people that need it there are cheap, safe & effective treatment options (HCQ). No to Dangerous vax.
