Anthony Albanese said Labor would be 'constructive' on changes to the $70 billion wage subsidy but would oppose any sudden halt to income support for those in need

Labor leader Anthony Albanese will call for a slow "taper" in JobKeeper payments for millions of Australians as a key demand in looming talks in Parliament, as the Morrison government prepares to revamp the scheme.

One week out from the government's July 23 economic statement, the Opposition Leader also called for a permanent increase in the JobSeeker benefit on the grounds it would help the economy as well as the unemployed. Labor called for a wage subsidy in the weeks before Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced JobKeeper on March 30, leading Mr Albanese to position his party as a defender of the scheme and an advocate for continued support.

Mr Albanese said the government should test the new policy plan, make sure the payments were targeted to those who needed the help most, and taper the end of the support over a long period.

No doubt a review......their are many living at home with mum and dad, no board and playing computer games earning double what they were.........young married couples with kids should be the priority. Still....Scomo has done a good job at short notice.

each way, the elmer fudd of politics

Lets face it money spent is what makes the economy work. If people have no money then the economy tanks further. Economics 101.

taper it down how? no one is frikkin working unless they are grocery, medical, fast food and servos.

ozipetezar constructive instead of screwing the worker in september labor prefers screwing them in november or december... liberal light in all its glory

That’s labor response and is the definition of -‘non-commital’ - Maybe Albo should swap his office chair for a fence. Sit on the fence and throw rocks both sides - labor is shown in this pandemic to be pathetic, indecisive, non-supportive, and irrelevant

Is it time for the 'taper tantrum' terminology?
