A study by the Migrant Worker Justice Initiative has found some international students have been experiencing verbal racist abuse during the coronavirus crisis and say they have been avoided based on their appearance.

A survey of more than 6,000 international students released on Thursday found almost a quarter have experienced verbal racist abuse during the pandemic and 25 per cent said people avoided them because of their appearance.

Of those surveyed,"1,500 described xenophobic slurs or said that they were treated as though they had COVID-19 due to their Asian appearance and some even described physical racist attacks," she said. Almost one third of Australians blame coronavirus pandemic on Chinese community, new poll finds A third of those surveyed said they were forced to turn to emergency support and charities to survive, and it's set to get worse. More than half said they expected their financial situation to deteriorate this year with 35 per cent saying they would soon run out of funds.

They make up 10 per cent of the labour market but are not eligible for federal government welfare support, something Associate Professor Berg says needs to change.

You know like the sense it made to stop buying corona beer. Yep great logic people

Yeah, I’m going to call this bullshit.

Will this end up being another racism story proven false like the majority of all the others

Chinese friend of mine was physically attacked in Colombia because he was Chinese.....but white man bad 🙄

HaroldHodson2 We all bleed red

Not surprised

ACOSS If you can afford to travel overseas for your education. You are the Global Elite.

Pure crap. Some 'international students' are not that but people that disguise as students that are actually migrants and have bad manners and anti social attitude and when people reject them they cry 'racism'. We have quite a few cases here in Harris Park NSW LawAndOrder

What? You need to study to know that?

Australians are racists but then again no one wants muslim immigrants.

I've gone out of my way to welcome several Asian lads

Australia is an inherently racist country. ScottMorrisonMP saying 'stop it'is not only completely ineffective, it highlights his lack of understanding, highlights his stupidity & own inherent racism auspol

Not the Australia of Gough, Hawke Keating, Rudd or Gillard. Only under the leadership of Howard, Abbott, Turnbull and Morrison. What have we become? How did people think voting for this lot again would make us a better place socially or economically?

Media keep trying to keep this story alive SBS must be desperate

Dr. Yan: the coronavirus was made in the lab, and being spread intentionally to the world by the Chinese Communist Party! Why we lost jobs, families and everything! Take down CCP now!

What they never look at is who is doing the verbal racist abuse. There is an assumption it is white people when in reality it is often aboriginal and Maori's.

ah 'foreigners' - y'know, the less Australian than whatever an Australian looks like... Yup, it's all their fault Wonder what makes an Australian? 2nd gen? 3rd gen? Their forebears worked the gold mines? Ancestors were convicts or migrants from UK? geez...

Yes very true , her in Melbourne our community get blame for the spread of virus just after Eid gatherings . Virus come from oversea , not us .

Knowing the virus came from overseas, is it not wise to avoid foreigners for a while? Makes sense to me.

Do these studies request evidence of the abuse? They just promote the self perpetuating victim mentality views of certain individuals even if the abuse didn’t actually occur.

Every international student I know gets along great here, so I'm starting to wonder if the people who are always saying this stuff aren't just nastly people who get called out for being cunts.

HegelianDialectic This racial division is getting satirical. It has failed. The room has changed and the media misread it. Narcissism tends to do that to you.

Stop pushing hate and division. EnemyofThePeople

Gas will help Australia bounce back better and stronger from the pandemicGas will help Australia bounce back better and stronger from the pandemic, writes AngusTaylorMP AngusTaylorMP Why is any news organisation permitting a clearly bought and owned politician, to spout such a transparently and probably false agenda? auspol AngusTaylorMP Excellent first step. We have been choked by the climate change stupidity and renewables hoax. AngusTaylorMP And I'm sure he writes it, safe in the knowledge that he will not be around to deal with the consequences of pushing fossil fuels in the face of climate annihilation.

Teacher stood down after suicide video shown in classroomAn investigation is underway after a teacher in Western Australia allows students to watch an 'absolutely unacceptable' video of a suicide during class time. Why do students need to have access to their mobiles whilst at school anyway. I have a vague memory of a read; Austin_Health offering some kind of Art therapy to help overcome psychological impact. They might be able to help. Worth exploring. So, what sort of teacher doesn't just know that this is not ok? We need to examine who we have entering this profession. What sort of process is used to ensure that graduates are equipped to apply duty of care?

'I was dispensable': COVID-19 pushing people who feel like 'collateral damage' to the brink, Q+A hearsUniversity educator Rosemary Kayess reveals the moment the coronavirus pandemic response of some countries made her feel that lives like hers were 'not valued', during an appearance on Q+A. There's a pandemic of selfishness going around. Not just the disease doing this - GOV’TS cut & run. The additional horror is that those older Australians who survive Covid-19 may have to endure long term or permanent debilitating illness and have to go into aged care.
