Breaking: Qantas plans to make another 2400 workers redundant by outsourcing all ground handling work at Australian airports | pwhatch

Qantas plans to axe another 2400 jobs by outsourcing all ground handling work at Australian airports, in a further blow to its workforce after 6000 redundancies were announced in June in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.and would face "tough decisions" during a slower-than-expected recovery from the health crisis.

Qantas Domestic chief executive Andrew David said the airline would save around $100 million a year by outsourcing its ground handling work at Adelaide, Alice Springs, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Townsville airports. "This obviously adds to the uncertainty but this is the unfortunate reality of what COVID-19 has done to our industry".

Jetstar chief executive Gareth Evans said that every major airline in the world used third-party ground handlers, which could do the work cheaper given they could service multiple airlines at the one airport.

pwhatch Why on earth does it surprise anyone when big companies do things like this? Covid responses will always be great for the megabuck boys, and truly savage on the workers.

pwhatch This decision makes no sense!

pwhatch One hopes, when all this is over, and Qantas needs extra staff to keep its business running, that folk repay the company for it loyalty by screwing it for every dollar they can in increased wages.

pwhatch So why did we pay the JobKeeper for then? Can we have our 200M + taxpayers money back then? auspol Qantas unionsaustralia jobs

pwhatch Why not? Let’s ditch that safety record to save a few cents and give the board fat bonuses.

pwhatch Oh what a cruel and mean decision - this won’t be good for the workers concerned.

pwhatch Qantas does not treat Australian workers well. We should reciprocate. Including not giving them any special taxpayer funding or special rights. They no longer earn that.

pwhatch Fck Qantarse

pwhatch Because outsourcing worked so well with hotel quarantine. Wouldn’t Qantas be trying to reassure it’s passengers that their safety is of concern instead of reinforcing doubts.

pwhatch Qnata that's the new name of us ground handlers. We are still all owed our 2018 cash bonuses. Qantas has held that over us saying once the EBA is signed. Us workers have lost all faith TWUMichaelKaine ASUnion dnatatravel Qnata

pwhatch Tough times. Not to sound like a massive a-hole but while borders are closed and Premiers are playing the “look at me” game. Shall we stop all forms of government support for travel industry until Premiers realise they’re not in control? Ok I’m an a-hole

pwhatch Casualisation, wage erosion and tenuous employment have made the pandemic impact worse. Solution? More of the same! But bank the JobKeeper $. Hard to believe. But not surprising. Look who it is. auspol

pwhatch

pwhatch Oh come on! Doesn’t QANTAS owe ~some~ loyalty to Australia in this crisis?!?!?

pwhatch Couldn’t they just move the jobs to Mildura? Bridget ‘Hey Do You Want Some Sports Rorts’ McKenzie thinks the airport there is flat out. Would be hard to see that from her home in Melbourne.

pwhatch Did anyone show outrage when the international CEO was fired? Cost cutting is happening at all levels if it is to be a viable business moving forward they obviously have to make changes and get lean for at least 12-24months

pwhatch This makes complete sense. How else is AJ gonna guarantee his annual bonus? 💰💸 💰💵

pwhatch Qantas can give our money back !!

pwhatch Disgraceful. Outsource the CEO !

pwhatch 715$ million taxpayer money well spent then.

pwhatch Not a great decision by the leadership and CEO. Times like these we need strong and bold leaders. Not money making CEOs and executive directors. Will still fly Qantas but hopefully CEO and his leadership team is sacked before anyone else is let go.

pwhatch This will end up in more than just tears.

pwhatch Standard Aussie company.. outsourcing..

pwhatch If there was ever an argument for a high speed rail network, it’s now auspol hsrailaus

pwhatch What is the point of Jobkeeper if they are just going to use money handed to them to keep employees on and sack them?

pwhatch Qantas this is counterintuitive to ongoing safety practices that are currently controlled inhouse, the standards of many of the GHA’s is concerning, this decision is a significant step backwards in regards to operational safety and assurance auspol

pwhatch Outsourced to a private security company?

pwhatch peoplebeforeprofit

pwhatch Yep, privatise the gains, socialise the losses. I’ll be thinking about fking Joyce’s bonus when my taxes go towards supporting the unemployed.

pwhatch Get rid of that greedy leprechaun, he is ruining this company sackjoyce

pwhatch There goes Qantas’ safety. Maintenance by shift working security guards.

pwhatch What happened to all the money taxpayers have given them?

pwhatch Big disaster for Australian families! More burden and support to/from CenterlinkL.

pwhatch So I should be looking at WhatsApp for my job offer. I'll look forward to equity and diversity training. Qantas

pwhatch Bet my arse Joyce hasn't taken a pay cut the prized fairy.

pwhatch So effectively no screening or job security for baggage handlers / ground staff, seems a bit of a terrorist & sect risk? - smell another unregulated aged care like disaster coming shortly. Sacking 2500 staff... Your 'jobkeeper' at work.

pwhatch Outsourced to where?

pwhatch Wowww, thats huge.

pwhatch Qantas really wants to push the friendship on this whole ‘Worlds Safest Airline’ thing they have going on

pwhatch Code for casual using the workforce.

pwhatch Qantas is finished thanks to Queensland, WA, NT, SA and Tasmania with their unscientific, baseless border closures

pwhatch Breaking: major corporates continue outsourcing functions to labour hire companies to force employees into low paid, insecure work with poor conditions and few rights. Australian public surprised.

pwhatch Remind me again why we are all so loyal to this mob?

pwhatch Because outsourcing is working so well for everyone at present Qantas
