Everyone knows you need to keep your back straight when you lift or you’ll hurt it. But there is almost no evidence it is true, say Australian scientists.

Everyone knows you need to keep your back straight when you lift or you’ll hurt it.But there is almost no evidence it is true, say Australian scientists.

Those results captured the public’s imagination – and spawned a whole industry teaching people the "proper" way to lift – despite there being little evidence the results translated to humans.this week, was led by Curtin University’s Nic Saraceni and Professor Peter O’Sullivan. There is also no evidence looking at lifting weights heavier than 12 kilograms, because the studies have not been done.“We have known this for decades. The emphasis on keeping the back straight is a bit of a dogma that’s lasted through the ages. It’s like the idea you should sit bolt upright at a computer – that’s not true either,” says David Hall, a work safety expert and spokesman for the Australian Physiotherapy Association.

They are wrong and unfortunately is so basic for anyone who understands ergonomics and work safety that bending your back while lifting weight is dangerous. This article should be deleted

You keep your back straight, bend your legs and activate your core to lift. 10 years of Uni and this is what scientist conclude. What don’t they ask weight lifters.

I don't lift - my butler does

Surely in this case, scientists AREN’T the appropriate experts?

Why it’s scientists and not scientist besides is physiotherapy science, these scientists should go and spend some time at a weight lifting training session

Hmm.. Keeping your back straight reduces the risk of twisting which increases injury risk to the small muscles designed to support your spine and encourages the use of the large muscles groups of the musculoskeletal system designed to lift objects among other risky factors!

Some dickhead Worksafe doctor took us for a ride?

Some things aren’t subject to trials because they are self-evident. This is one of them. Sorry. It’s just a stupid report. I bet there’s no studies that if you eat 24 Big Mac’s a day for 3 years you won’t be able to tie your own shoes. But do we need a study?

But..but... the science was settled!
