The Morrison government has delayed plans to introduce its contentious religious discrimination bill to Parliament, following a high-powered intervention from church groups | CanberraCamper

The Morrison government has delayed plans to introduce its contentious religious discrimination bill to Parliament, following a high-powered intervention from church groups, who threatened to withdraw their support for the bill if greater freedoms were not granted to Australians of faith.

Attorney-General Christian Porter has previously said the bill would be introduced to Parliament before Christmas, but on Saturday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the bill would be pushed back until next year. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a delay to the government's religious discrimination bill plans.Mr Morrison also said a second draft of the bill would be released for public comments "before the end of the year".

The setback to the government's agenda follows a bruising week for the Coalition government, after it suffered a shock defeat on industrial relations law on Thursday and is struggling to get the numbers to repeal its refugee medical transfer, or "medevac" laws.

Privately, government MPs and religious groups have been expecting a delay to the bill, given the degree of criticism and the number of diverse views on the matter. One MP noted on Saturday, there was no need to "rush into it".

CanberraCamper Cultures and religions we all grew up with are failing us in modern times today. The advise here is to change them from being free into being controlled. Nothing else is required at this moment.

dhanashree0110 CanberraCamper Well Done

CanberraCamper What do they want with their freedom? To be able to be bigots, homophobes, Liars, cheats, what? What is it that they don’t have now. Will some please explain to me.

CanberraCamper Do we have a bill for discrimination from religious?

CanberraCamper You should be allowed to believe whatever you want, but forcing YOUR beliefs on me is OPPRESSION. It’s like saying I can’t have ice cream because you aren’t allowed to. Screw you guys, I’m having gelato!

CanberraCamper Of course the churches want more...they always did. Probably want a blasphemy law installed too. Social regression at its most damaging.

CanberraCamper Worrying My Mum runs a charity store & gets Work of the Dole workers, once she got a foreigner who refused to work or do anything. She had to let them go and they tried to pin her as a racist for it! Most immigrant workers aren't like this but there's always that 1

CanberraCamper Well, as a Satanist, I expect EVERY right the Jesus fandom gets.

CanberraCamper religion = greatest bullshit story ever told

CanberraCamper Ban the un-Australian halal & kosher slaughter of animals in Australia. Do what Denmark did & put AnimalWelfare ahead of outdated halal / kosher ReligiousFreedom! auspol auspol2019

CanberraCamper This is about like the illegal robodebt, now he wants religion to have a free pass over discriminatory practices against fringe groups.

CanberraCamper Church groups want greater rights to discriminate. Damn them all.

CanberraCamper This legislation could produce open revolt to it. I'm not putting up with anti-gay doctrine wherever I work. Lock me up if you must but what's wrong is wrong.

CanberraCamper Legalising gender discrimination and racism on the basis of an imaginary fantasy. What a buffoon.

CanberraCamper The Priminister should take the opportunity to Dump the religious cults, cut them out, they should not have any more power, this isn't the dark ages FFS

CanberraCamper Scomo the Scummo strikes again

CanberraCamper Stop dabbing in religion Morrison . It will come back and bit you. Next you will be instructing the Vatican.

CanberraCamper Religious freedom is the freedom to believe in whatever one wants and not to discriminate against those who don’t share their belief!

CanberraCamper So I can still make fun of people because of their religion?

CanberraCamper Your religious beliefs are yours and yours only. Religious belief is incredibly personal and shld never be universal or give permission for people to ACT on these opinions that could harm or affect others. Your belief governs what YOU do not humanity.

CanberraCamper just take your loony pentecostal bull and get it out of our secular system

CanberraCamper We are a secular country. Faith cannot ever trump the law of the land. This bollox is not needed here. And while you’re at it, give us back the $4bn you’re giving to Catholic schools

CanberraCamper Omnishambles

CanberraCamper Considering most other religions call athieism a religion, this will give me the right to tell people to take their deluded religious views and fck off?

CanberraCamper Hahahaha, all hail the mighty Morrison, after this week just gone, he must feel shell-shocked. Taylor, Hansen and now church groups. Thought and Prayers Smirk Face.

CanberraCamper Looks like the bigots need more legal protections to be bigots.

CanberraCamper Scummo. That guy is slow motion train wreck.

CanberraCamper The Constitution gives all the protection faiths need. Nothing more is needed, and any more is just an attempt to bias laws in favour of faiths. We are a secular democracy and want to remain so.

CanberraCamper Why is the fool still PM? However, the religious bill, if it gets through, will allow me to call all manner of people cnts in the name of my religion, and if ScottMorrisonMP or anyone doesn’t like it, I’ll sue. It will be my religious right.

CanberraCamper koalakiller

CanberraCamper An Anti discrimination bill that discriminates. What could possibly go wrong?

CanberraCamper Waiting for God to answer his mobile. Pick up Goddam it 🙏🏼😆

CanberraCamper Maybe he could use the summer break to look into state legislation and see that every jurisdiction already has laws for this

CanberraCamper Religious privilege bill

CanberraCamper He just wants to prolong the toxic public discourse that kills queers like the postal survey did

CanberraCamper He's no leader, just another marketing 'hype' man.

CanberraCamper Ah, so delays something as it doesn’t appear to have gone his way. Maybe he should call the churches and have a chat.

CanberraCamper How stupid of this government to get involved in legislating something as broad, potentially dangerous and impossible to define like “religious freedoms”. They should just leave the courts to deal with it as they do now. This will be their “barnacle”. auspol

CanberraCamper There must be a truck load of more meaningful things this government could be doing

CanberraCamper Probably not easy to achieve equality for all when their is such a wide spectrum of beliefs that interact and overlap conflict with one another. If true equality is not achievable, then which one becomes more equal than the others and why ?

CanberraCamper There is no need for it as vast majority of Australians aren’t religious.
