The state will appeal after a man avoided a mandatory jail sentence for assaulting two paramedics while under the effects of a "cornucopia" of drugs.

James Haberfield leaves Melbourne Magistrates Court after he avoided jail for assaulting two paramedics. The decision was widely criticised by the paramedics, Ambulance Victoria, the ambulance workers' union, the public and the state government, with Premier Daniel Andrews urging Director of Public Prosecutions Kerri Judd, QC, to appeal the sentence.

While he was being cared for in the rear of the vehicle, and in an "acutely psychotic state", he became aggressive, punching paramedic Monica in the face, wrapping his arms around her and squeezing.
