A police officer was taken to hospital with upper body injuries after she was struck in a hit-and-run at a school in Melbourne over the weekend. 7NEWS

The officer, aged in her 20s, was responding after an alarm started going off at Patterson River Secondary College in Seaford at 3am on Sunday.Watch the latest News on Channel 7 or stream for free onThe alarm had been triggered by an intruder who had broken into a staff room and the canteen at the school.

But when police arrived and tried to intercept the intruder, who was in a white ute, the young officer was struck by the vehicle. The officer, aged in her 20s, was responding after an alarm started going off at Patterson River Secondary College.Police Association Secretary Wayne Gatt said he spoke to the officer on Sunday and said she was “in good spirits”.

“It’s fortunate she has not sustained any serious injuries that we’re aware of,” he said in a statement.“Situations like this provide a stark reminder of how dangerous it is for police and PSOs to go to work every day.”Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
