King Charles has sought out police officers and other emergency responders to thank them for protecting the public as record crowds gathered to mourn his mother.
Officers have also come from Gibraltar, the Channel Islands and Northern Ireland. More than a million people are expected to descend on the capital on Monday, breaking previous records for royal gatherings. “Pickpockets and the like will see this as an opportunity to cash in,” he said. “But from a terrorism perspective, the UK national threat level is substantial which means an attack is likely and we know that terrorists like to attack crowds and of course we’re now generating, probably, the largest crowd this country has ever put together in a small place in one time.
He said very few countries were allowed to bring their own armed bodyguards because British police could easily confuse a plain-clothed protection officer for an attacker in a rapid-response environment.
