Prime Minister ScottMorrisonMP says he is “not concerned” the travel ban imposed on return travellers from India will damage relations between the two nations.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he is “not concerned” the travel ban imposed on return travellers from India will damage relations between the two nations. On Tuesday, Labor Senator Penny Wong raised concerns over the Coalition’s approach to the India travel ban and said it had the potential to undermine critical relations with India as aggressive posturing by China continues to escalate.

However, this morning the prime minister pointed out Australia had sent a “significant” amount of humanitarian support to India to help the country through the coronavirus crisis. He said the temporary pause in travel would enable Australia to get citizens, residents and their immediate families back on repatriation flights. Mr Morrison suggested without the ban the government would have been “eroding their capability” to help repatriate Australians over the medium to longer term.
