Greens leader Adam Bandt has accused Prime Minister Scott Morrison of imposing a “racist” travel ban on India and has called for the Coalition to lift the order immediately. Eight members of the crossbench including Mr Bandt have signed a letter to Mr Morrison demanding he lift the ban on flights from India. The order penalises citizens and residents stranded in the COVID-stricken country if they attempt to travel home with hefty fines up to $66,000 or a five-year jail sentence.
Mr Bandt said, “the government shouldn’t be threatening people with jail time because the government’s failed to build enough quarantine facilities or organise enough repatriation flights”. “The ban is racist, it’s possibly illegal, it’s not supported by the medical advice and it’s got to go,” he told Sky News.
