Hanan and Hany had been visiting their two-month-old baby in the special care nursery twice a day — but a hard lockdown of their home put a stop to visits, and made it difficult to get breastmilk to their daughter.

Caring for a premature baby in the special care nursery is challenging at the best of times — but after their flats went into hard lockdown, one set of parents had an especially difficult week.

But on Sunday morning, police told Hanan she was not allowed out of her North Melbourne apartment block."I'm not able to visit my daughter.Hany can't wait to see baby Hanen again.Hany said police at the flats told the couple to contact the Department of Health and Human Services to organise someone to collect and deliver the breastmilk for them."The 11.30am feed has passed, the 2.30pm feed is passed," Hany said.

On Wednesday, the family received the results of their COVID-19 tests. Because they were negative, Hanan was finally allowed to be escorted by an ambulance to visit her baby for 90 minutes.

OMFG - this situation is not unique to lockdown & occurs in many medical situations whereby babies receiving medical treatment like this cannot see parents so STOP using lockdown as an excuse FFS! Use investgative journalism & report facts based on all the evidence!

I feel for the mum but agree with the system. I wouldn't want my newborn being in an ICU or ward that was being put at risk by a potential covid contact.

Why would you want to go to the NICU when you possibly have covid 19? The hospital would not allow you too anyway. Too risky for all the babies and staff.

That's heartbreaking

Fair enough. The last thing a neonatal ICU needs is a virus outbreak. I bet those parents would feel a lot worse if they were responsible or the death of their baby and/or others.

Do you even care how hard doctors and nurses work in nicu units to keep all those babies safe? The ABC have completely lost the plot! DefundTheABC

Good . I’m sure all the other parents with babies in the ward don’t want those parents coming in either until they are covid cleared .

bellfrances It's an awful reality that this virus is causing but does the media have to focus so heavily on every negative aspect and angle they can possibly find?

Well would it be better that her baby and all the other ones in special care nursery get covid? Just asking that she needs to be tested, and then completely isolated with results in hand isn’t much to ask!

Now no mention of the threat to the whole maternity ward not to mention hospital staff ! Absolute idiots incl ABC for the sob story ! Intensive care for god sake

Baby better off never to return cause it's high chance when growing up around public housing that will be a drug dealer, addict, thief, welfare bludger and blame everyone else but themselves for problems they go through

Scientific models have again failed miserably in predicting the seriously of covid-19. Imperial college failed again. In Australia, covid has proved to be far less lethal than previous influenza outbreaks. Terrible policies, destroyed people's livelihoods for ever for some!

spiritgateoz As someone who has sat beside my 3 day old son after open heart surgery at RCH, the staff in ICU are unbelievably caring and skilled. It is a vivid memory. They will do everything to protect patients and families including not putting mothers or babies at risk.

Does anyone ever actually read articles these days?

The article goes on to say that once the mums Covid19 test came back negative she was taken to see the baby. Also her breastmilk was delivered to the hospital , although it took a while to arrange this.

Safety of the child comes first.

EBM is critical for Prems. Disappointing authorities couldn't make appropriate arrangements. Donor milk and formula is just no substitute. After all these months solutions ought to be investigated to enable Prems to be with their parents.

They could have infected the baby, who looks vulnerable already

Life or death for the baby !!!

A very sad story but thankfully they tested negative and have been reunited with their daughter 🙏🏻

The circumstances are complicated but it’s SHAMEFUL that the milk pickup agreement was not honoured...probably due to an administrative cock-up ( assuming this information is accurate). It’s stressful enough for this family without dealing with these SNAFUs

I am surprised they would even want to visit their baby. The risk to their baby and the people taking care of their baby is to great.

Shame on you Paid shills...

Left!

unfortunate but you don't want baby to get covid19 right?

It seems the A.B.C is now bringing us emotional crap like the commercial stations. That's what funding cuts bring us.

Wtf

Whilat it is not easy, the parents need to realise this is best for all concerned IStandWithDan

The race baiting fake news ABC

Every rule has a grey side, not simply black and white. Every law should have an elasticity, to allow the exception to the rule. This is one of those cases. Test the parents, mask the parents and let them see their child for the sake of humanity avoiding mental health problems

Well actually I would agree to this one, they're immune systems aren't fully developed yet.

Massive law suite coming the government’s way after this is all over.. Law firms are circuling..

There is more to this story. Lots of parents with prem babies are separated from each other if one is displaying symptoms of illness. With Covid no hospital can take that risk with any of the babies who are weak & at risk.

So wait? People would rather the potential for the baby AND other patients, staff and parents be infected with COVID? This probably takes the absolute cake for mindless selfish people. Yes it’s sad but what if the mother had Herpes? She wouldn’t be allowed to touch the child.

sad. Hope all good

😢 I hope they are all well and safe and healthy so they can be reunited soon.

When is the next State Election? I need to get my bets on early

It is awful but this is the reality of COVID

This is heartbreaking

Well as the old saying from the Spanish flu goes 'This kind of sads thing will happen in a unprecedented lock down.'

This is just wrong, heartless government

Insanity.. the state is the worst parent any child could have

omg, poor baby☹️

This is f*cked up DanielAndrewsMP . Please show some compassion.
