Turns out that crucial life skills acquired at an early age, of tepee-style campfire construction and correct marshmallow roasting – gooey on the inside, crispy but not too blackened on the outside – are not easily forgotten.
It is the services part of the trade equation that has been dealt a body blow by COVID-19, because the sale of services generally – but not always – involves a face-to-face performance. On the other side of the ledger, Australian residents travelling overseas spent $58.3 billion on foreign tourism. Again, in the lingo, we say that Australians "imported" almost $60 billion in tourism services from foreigners. Even though we spent the money overseas, it shows up as an import.
Of course, not everyone can afford to suddenly start taking lavish domestic holidays, particularly not those affected by job losses. But for the rest of us, COVID-19 has had another remarkable impact – of actually increasing our combined savings buffer to half-century highs. "What are people going to do with this extra saving and improved debt situation?" Lowe asked, before concluding: "The better outcome for the economy is for households and businesses to keep spending and investing."Key to this, says Lowe, will be the ability of governments to keep public confidence high in both their job prospects and the ability of our health system to cope with inevitable renewed COVID-19 outbreaks.
Travelling Australia is too expensive. You also forget that many travellers visit family overseas.
It costs a lot more to holiday in Australia, even taking the flights into account.
Nope. I’ll save my annual leave and $ for when the international borders reopen. It’s so expensive to holiday locally. Everything. Accom. Food. You name it.
Job seeker at $40 a day in December That’s not going to pay for holiday let alone food on the table
Holiday yes as soon as borders open anywhere but Vic
I’m looking forward to holidaying again in Australia but it won’t be in Victoria whilst we’re still forced to wear masks. Masks at the beach in summer..sorry no thanks.
Yeah nah..im out of here. Not wearing a mask!
Yes if you own your house and have disposable income - go for it !!! However I feel the majority will be paying down debts. Given situation in UK and USA, who knows what tomorrow will bring. Not doom/gloom - just reality.
Ironic that the stock photo is of a family with kids, coz there's nothing more Australian tourism operators love more than gauging those of us with school age kids.. 'Oh you want to fly/rent/hire over the holidays? There's a surcharge for that sorry!'
Happy to travel locally, but you know...Melbournian. Nobody will let us travel.
And pay for expensive accommodation and flights..cheaper overseas
😂😂😂😂
Not many will want to spend holidays in Victoria with masks mandated outdoors.
Sadly it is cheaper to go overseas than Australia is so bloody expensive to tour
When a trip to Alice Springs to see Uluru costs as much or more than a trip overseas, it is easy to see why Australians dont spend as much on holdiays here.
