So violent is Chicago's South Side, the locals call it 'Chiraq'. An Australian filmmaker has just survived 18 months living in its absolute worst spot, which he says rivals most of the war zones he's been in.

When filmmaker George Gittoes returns to his home on the New South Wales South Coast, he kisses his front lawn — because"you never do know if you're going to come back from one of these things".

"The South Side of Chicago is called 'Chiraq' by the locals, because more people get shot there than American soldiers did in the Iraq war," Mr Gittoes said."There was one weekend where there were four fatal shootings within a couple of hundred feet of our apartment."Mr Gittoes was told he would not be able to live in the South Side, where he wanted to work, and would have to travel in with armed bodyguards to film his documentary.

"The gang we're working with are constantly having their people shot, so they have to go out and shoot the people who shoot them, otherwise they appear weak," he said.

So the all of women there kill people too? No, it is not in their nature, or they have better frontal lobe function than the males and show restraint. To suggest that it is just caused by poverty and race is questionable as the cause and effect relationship is unproven.

'We've been baffled at the resistance': NSW finally joins national domestic violence campaignUntil this week, the NSW Government had been the only state or territory government in the country that was not a member of Our Watch, the national violence prevention agency. Oh, I think we ALL know the real reason for that - the LNP govt. As a strong supporter of DV prevention & support, it still baffles me that male victims are not supported with the same gusto as female victims. Assistance given to women still leave our male victims vulnerable and in the exact same situation as those we are trying to help At least they mentioned domestic violence related suicide. How many men take their lives because they don't get believed?

I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I'll never understand the judges' selection. Who are the judges? The Packer's pick for winner was far more deserving. It's time to bring in a new panel to judge the Archibald Prize.
