NRL proposes top-10 finals series in 'wildcard weekend' revamp | mrchrisnico

The NRL finals will undergo a radical revamp next year if clubs agree to the introduction of a wildcard concept that would increase the number of teams in the playoffs from eight to 10.

In a nutshell, teams that finish in ninth and 10th place will still get the chance to play in the finals. The top six teams at the end of the season would enjoy a weekend off as seventh hosts 10th and eighth hosts ninth in elimination matches. In 2018 the NRL featured 36 "dead" or "half-dead" games in which one or both clubs competing were out of the finals race. Under the proposed system, only eight games would have fallen into that category last year.

"At the Titans last year we were probably done and dusted early. There was still some hope but it gets to the point you have to string a lot of wins together. If there was an appetite for change, the concept could be given final approval by the ARLC in a matter of months.

mrchrisnico Haha Is this the curveball to make us forget about recent player behaviour?

mrchrisnico You have to have people to watch the game first of all and at the moment they are losing fans. I am one of them.

mrchrisnico What muppets

mrchrisnico why not just make it the whole comp makes the finals ha ha ha

mrchrisnico That is both a ridiculous and desperate idea. It's not the same as the NFL either. Twelve teams out of 32 make the finals - barely one third. The smarter thing to do would to either reduce the number of teams in the NRL or shorten the competition.

mrchrisnico 16 makes as much sense

Slight wobble in hard line but NRL on the straight and narrowBravo Peter Beattie and the movers and shakers of rugby league who changed the rules on Thursday to establish a new kind of sin bin – dare I say under the circumstances of this week, a cardinal sin bin. Peter_Fitz The NRL does not know whether the players are guilty or not. No one knows until the court case has been held. The NRL are concerned about image and money. They have no interest in individual players – this lack of concern for the individual was Stalin’s approach in Russia. Peter_Fitz Paying a guilty man’s price before a fair hearing in court, perilous times for men in all walks of life, especially footballers. Peter_Fitz Beattie never did anything right in his life
