No exams. No ATAR. No timetabled classes. A new independent high school in Sydney's west says 'rather than beginning with the syllabus, we'll begin with the student'

Instead, students at the new CathWest Innovation College, with campuses in Mount Druitt and Emu Plains, will complete two terms of set projects before developing solutions to their problems, building portfolios to apply to university or having the choice to pitch ideas directly to businesses.

CathWest is expected to open next year with about 150 students across years 10 and 11 and will eventually cater up to year 12. "I also like the idea of doing schooling in a non-traditional way. At most schools teachers lecture and some people struggle in class, but there it'll be more hands-on.India said she plans to work on something related to writing, music or drama.

No employment prospects.

Excellent ..maybe

Why would any employer bother interviewing any of this school’s students for a job? When boss needs complete report or milestone achieved, or task completed, it must be as close to 100% accurate as possible. That is the job that you get paid for. Sigh! Preparing students for dole

Egotists, narcissists and the oppositionally defiant will have a wonderfully affirming time. Of course, they will learn nothing to the purpose and will be prepared for no profession that requires discipline, but that’s ok......

Anyone who thinks this is radical should know; it’s the basic philosophy of the education system in Finland. Since Finnish schools adopted this approach, they have moved swiftly up the world rankings to become 1 worldwide on delivering learning for students. And no NAPLAN.

What Teacher in their right mind would want to teach there?

They’re standardisation exams for a reason.

No emotional resilience. No responsibility. Have fun competing for jobs!

Daily climate strikes.

The Mickey Mouse arts degree of high school...

That should end well....

Net result a lot of dumb unemployable people lined up at Centrelink.

YES and dump NAPLAN it’s anti educational

Clearly very few of the people commenting have children that don't fit into mainstream schooling, nor do they understand the desperation of parents for an alternative they can afford to try. Shut up the lot of you.

No discipline. No result.

This is a Rousseau idea, a Carl Rogers idea. That the individual knows what they want & that they have a pure heart & are born good is all part of this philosophy. It's only partly right as teachers of uncontrollable classes & whole schools know. Children a mixture of good & bad.

Another example of why Australia will end up as Hong Kong MkII - a satellite State of China

CathWestInnov8 how about a far nth coast campus ? We r desperate up here for an affordable innovative high school

I recall when the NSW government removed grammar and spelling tests from the curriculum in favour of phonetic self expression. This genius idea resulted in a generation of people who couldn’t spell, nor could they string a sentence together.

Oh dear - another moron production line

School system is well out dated. Kids need to be taught life skills. They get out in the real world and its all too much for a lot if them.

. “...we're effectively gutting the science rooms ...” . I bet.

What do you say to a graduate of this school?

. In the future, Anglo-Saxon kids will be confined to such schools while the children of our Chinese overlords will attend real schools where they will be taught the means by which to more effectively conduct the Occupation.

. “Cliches.” Can you say “cliches”?

Yeah that will work. The left dumbing students down for fifty years.

No job.
