'We will never back down.' About 80,000 Sydney students and adults rallied at Sydney's Domain on Friday despite state and federal government ministers ordering pupils to stay in school

"Today I want to tell all the grown-ups that our environment is important and we need to protect it," year 5 Richmond Public School student Andrea Villafaña, 10, told the crowd.

The Global Climate Strike on Friday attracted some of the biggest crowds since protests against the Iraq war.Organisers described Friday's turnout of 300,000 Australians as the biggest nationwide since 500,000 people protested against the Iraq war in 2003. Similar school strikes in March and November last year drew 40,000 and 15,000 people.

Sydney student organiser Daisy Jeffrey, 17, said the "most incredible day" proved Australia wanted climate action. "I could never have anticipated we would grow to the size we have today. At the first strike I said this was just the beginning," Ms Jeffrey said."None of us should have to live in fear of an uncertain future ... By each of us leading in our own way, and teaching others to do the same, we can build our way out of this mess.

Why did these people not protest in front of the 🇺🇸 🇨🇳 and 🇮🇳 embassies?

tell them kids PM n his coal cabals r denying climate change to sell more coal

I always am amused at the greenies marching. Their is always one with the big plastic earrings “the throw away generation”

These ppl have no idea on what they are marching about or their own personal footprint.

Remember the anti Vietnam war marches of the early seventies. Like his conservative forbearers Morrison is destined to be remembered with contempt

What are you protesting about?

For the nth time, can we shift these people to china and India to protest.....that’s where the real climate change problems are right?

Count again, way more than 80,000

Baaaahaaaaaa...80,000 people...more like 10,000..and 4 Million didn't march..we win..

Our hope and our future 👏👏👏

deniseshrivell That's a lot of people.

Just imagine if people 16 years old had the vote. I guess there would never be another Liberal Government ever.

Ridiculous. It was a free day off school. Nothing more than that. climatestrike Auspol

I don't know if they order them I think your purposely exaggerating the story...i bet most kids in nsw wouldn't know who the premier of Victoria is or even when the last election was. Fake news

For context, this is less than 2% of the population of Sydney.

No facts, no solutions, no results. Sounds like the next Greens Senator

Principal’s powerful message to climate strikersA Sydney school principal has penned a powerful letter directed at all the students who will be rallying in favour of climate change action today. Perhaps Michael Parker can dismantle this equation then: If (AGW = (0.03 x 0.0004 x atmosphere)) then {LOL} I'm watching a group of brainwashed, gullible, naïve & susceptible children following the pied piper into oblivion. Wow, look at all the brain washed people. Just goes to show that people are more gullible than you think. Good job media.

Global climate strike LIVE: Australian school students march in protest of climate changeSchool students all around Australia are going on strike from 12pm today in protest of the federal government's inaction on climate change and environmental protection. I think it’s time adults stopped imposing the weight of the world on the young. The fear and anxiety is actually damaging them mentally. They’re too young to fathom such an issue rationally. Yes there are serious issues at hand but we do need to protect children from fear. Fervent zealots of the new religion climatology tell off LNP coal cabals that we r not going to tolerate new coal mines

Global climate strike LIVE: Australian school students march in protest of climate changeThousands of students and other supporters of the climate change action have filled The Domain in Sydney and are listening (and cheering, and heckling) as speakers address the crowd following a welcome to country. Follow live: Big crowd in Albury outside Sussan Ley’s office. Yet these same people block major development of nuclear & hydro in Australia, the only two technologies that actually displace fossil fuels. Hypocrites to the last. Climate scientist Dr. Katherine Hayhoe says that one of the best things we can do about climate change is to talk about it. So, I drew from my work as a clinical psychologist to write this guide on how to have a useful conversation about climate change.

Global climate strike LIVE: Australian school students march in protest of climate changeSchool students all around Australia are going on strike from 12pm today in protest of the federal government's inaction on climate change and environmental protection. 50,000 is a very conservative estimate from what I saw. At least 100,000 if not 150 Apparently 50,000. So, 50,000 / 25,606,554. 0.1952% of the population. Don't know if that'll have much of an impact in real terms. But speaking of real terms, guess that's at least higher than the 0.04% of CO2 in the atmosphere... 😏 It's been a great march. The only thing I didn't like was I heard quite a few racist comments and jokes amongst the crowd while walking.

Hundreds of thousands of students across the country set to walk out of schoolThousands of workers are also expected to take part. 9News Collectively, the farmers, who are on the frontlines of climate change impacts will remain mute, & at the same time lament over their dry fields. Astonishing. Please ask your 'journos' to interview as many of the strikers as possible and ask them to explain CC, what we need to do, how we will do it and what it will actually achieve. Facts and figures please NOT rhetoric and hyperbole Though how many are pretending to care just to get out of school?
