One of the policemen who first registered former lawyer Nicola Gobbo as an informer may have had “intimate relations” with her, a public inquiry has been told.
Inspector Trevor Ashton, outside the royal commission this week, was one of the first officers to register Nicola Gobbo as a police informer.During cross-examination of Mr Ashton, now an inspector at Victoria Police professional standards command, Ms Gobbo’s lawyer Rishi Nathwani asked him if he knew Ms Gobbo had intimate relationships with police officers.“For example,” Mr Nathwani responded. “Mr Argall indicates he, on occasions, had intimate relationships with Ms Gobbo.
He had raided her house in Carlton in 1993 after police received a tip-off to Crime Stoppers that her hotel bouncer boyfriend was dealing drugs, the commission heard. Inspector Ashton said Ms Gobbo told them about amphetamines she’d stashed in a cigarette packet in her bedroom drawer, and directed them to two kilograms of amphetamine that was hidden in the laundry.
He noted in 1995 that her information was reliable, that she “genuinely wanted to assist police” and was “seeking a career as a solicitor”. Mr Ashton said he sent an email to the staff at professional standards when there was a force-wide call in January this year for anyone who had dealings with 3838 to come forward.
