The role played by Nicola Gobbo, a former gangland barrister turned high-level police source, and the force’s use of her is at the centre of a royal commission being held in Melbourne.
Current Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton was on the steering committee that oversaw Petra and Briars with Mr Overland. “Those were issues being raised by relatively junior members of the police force ... Those issues were being raised to police officers who were at the very highest echelon of the police force.”Mr Winneke, during questioning of current Assistant Commissioner Neil Paterson, said Ms Gobbo's handlers were worried she would be exposed as a source, and that allegations police used privileged information would be made public and these revelations could lead to a royal commission.
Ms Gobbo was first registered as an informer in 1995, when she tried to set-up her boyfriend in a failed undercover sting. She was also giving information to police from 2005 until 2010, at the height of the gangland war when she acted for the who’s who of the underworld.
