Newcastle's Anglican diocese has been warned not to ruin the church ahead of a vote to bless same-sex marriages.

Dean Katherine said she was concerned for the impact of the Archbishop's message on the broader community.

"I think it gives us an opportunity to engage with it more deeply and with the coverage that it's had in the wider press, for us to see how this affects the wider community as well.""We actually do live with lots of diversity in different theological views within the broader Anglican Church," she said.

The blessing of the marriage of two local Anglican priests, Father John Davis and Father Rob Whalley, has now been postponed as the matter has been referred to the church's Appellate Tribunal, which is the highest ecclesiastical court. "It has been planned by the General Synod Standing Committee as a consultation, with no opportunity for making decisions," he told the Sydney synod.
