A mother who lost her son in a tragic car accident on a notoriously dangerous stretch of road in Victoria has spoken about her loss ahead of what should have been a major milestone for her child. Declan Day, 19, travelled to Mount St Gwinear in Gippsland to see the snow with several of his mates on June 19, 2022. On the way back, they decided to visit the small, historic town of Walhalla — a popular tourist destination which is home to only 20 residents.
His friends are also planning to gather at the family home. Samantha said the driver wasn’t speeding at the time, nor did he have alcohol in his system. After Declan’s death, Coroner Simon McGregor found the road was damp at the time of the accident. While there are guard rails on some parts of the road, there was not one at installed on the the first bend out of Walhalla at the time of Declan’s accident.
