When 7 NEWS presenter Mark Ferguson was asked to select the most challenging story of his career, he had to think back through a massive 40-year body of work. But it wasn’t hard for him to pinpoint just one very difficult story. In February 2014, 11-year-old Luke Batty was murdered at the hands of his father at a regional Victorian cricket oval. The little boy’s shocking death ultimately led to his mother Rosie Batty becoming a domestic violence campaigner and Australian of the Year.
But as the tragic story was unfolding, it shocked even the most veteran of news journalists. “The hardest day I can remember in the studio, is that day,” Ferguson tells 7NEWS.com.au of covering the “horrible, horrible” Batty story. “You think you are becoming a little emotional and you think, ‘Am I going to get through this?” “That was a really horrible, horrible story, sad to reflect on.” Ferguson explained that, in circumstances involving tragic deaths, it is not necessarily typical to “hear from the mother or father straight” awa
