More than 70 serious injuries to food delivery workers were recorded last year in NSW, with the state’s work safety authority also warning companies of the significant risks posed to untrained riders often working on student visas.
“It was observed that HungryPanda food delivery riders using motorcycles are on international student visa, are riding using overseas licenses and they are not provided with adequate instruction, information and training to understand the risks associated with the work and to operate safely,” the notice said.
Inquiry chair and opposition gig economy spokesman Daniel Mookhey said he expected the Uber representatives to explain to the inquiry the company’s “ghastly safety record”.“If their injury rate is so high, it’s clear we can’t trust them to write their own rules. They need to tell us about the steps they’ve taken to make sure no one else dies riding with their platform,” Mr Mookhey said.
“As we work through potential enhanced regulatory options, I’ve sent our inspectors are out in force ensuring the gig economy both understands, and is complying with, NSW’s Work Health and Safety legislation,” he said. But TWU secretary Michael Kaine said the taskforce was not addressing the root cause of the problem, which was the financial and time pressures riders were put under.
