Tony Mokbel offered to become informer against corrupt cops, royal commission told

Drug kingpin Tony Mokbel offered to turn informer against allegedly corrupt police in exchange for favourable plea deals for himself and then girlfriend Danielle McGuire in 2002.

It is unclear why police did not accept Mokbel’s cooperation other than Detective De Santo telling the royal commission that the offer “wasn’t on” and the information wasn’t considered useful. The approaches to police were made through Mokbel’s then barrister, Nicola Gobbo, who herself became a key police informer in 2005, including against Mokbel and many of her other clients.

Mr Mokbel wanted to know if information he provided would benefit Ms Maguire in relation to her charge. I told Mr Mokbel that it would not assist.Taskforce Ceja was launched after a major security and probity breaches inside the unit, including the leaking and theft of confidential information, inappropriate relationships between criminals and police, and claims officers were involved in manufacturing and trafficking of drugs.

“Advised [Gobbo] that I had spoken to Mokbel in relation to general issues only,” he added in a note an hour later. In other sensational testimony, the commission heard that Ms Gobbo was already in regular, if informal, contact with police despite not becoming officially registered as Informer #3838 until September 2005.“She was quite prominent in reporting what she perceived to be perceptions of corruption of members of the drugs squad,” he said.

How on earth a Royal Commission was not ordered at the turn of the century amazes me........Melbourne's paying the price now as the drug capital of Australia.
