The WA government's signature project is facing cost blowouts, delays and a slow uptake in train patronage. While the transport minister believes new trains are a beneficial investment, an economist says it's risky.

Metronet is the WA government's signature project, but as new trains are unveiled, is the project delivering on its promise? The first of Metronet 's C-series trains hit the tracks tomorrow as part of the WA government's flagship infrastructure project.

Tomorrow that promise will be fulfilled, according to the minister, with the debut of the new C-series trains on Perth's passenger rail network. "My mum actually worked down at the Midland workshop in the admin area and my dad was a train driver, so I think I've got that in my blood," she said. The rest of the fleet is expected to be on track by 2029.

Curtin Economics Centre research fellow Mike Dockery has a different view, saying the investment was a "risky way to allocate taxpayers' money". "I'd be surprised if it had sufficient scale and sufficient demand … to do that it would probably have to become an exporter of rail components and manufactured rail."

Other smaller projects have also been funded, such as the relocation of Midland train station and the development of social and affordable housing around Metronet station precincts. With two of the major rail extensions set to come online by the end of the year for residents of Ellenbrook and Yanchep, Ms Saffioti voiced confidence the passengers would hop on board.
