Shocked passengers say they found the gun on a train seat after the man left the carriage at a Sydney station. Police say it is a gel-blaster.

Shocked passengers have found a “gun” on a Sydney peak-hour train, saying a man simply left it on his seat when getting off the carriage. Police say the pistol is a gel blaster.

The man stood up and exited as the train pulled into Sydenham just after 8am. The woman who had been sitting opposite noticed a strange black shape on the now vacant seat as the train pulled away.It was a black pistol, pointed toward the aisle of the train travelling on the Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line.

“This poor woman who had been sitting across from him was saying out loud, ‘Oh, that man left a gun on the train’,” one witness on the train toldThe woman alerted other passengers who all jumped from their seats and began asking what the gun’s owner looked like.Passengers alerted the guards at Redfern as the train continued its journey into Sydney.“About 9am today , police were called to Redfern railway station, following reports a gel blaster had been located,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Gel blasters are illegal in NSW and often are used in robberies or other crimes of intimidation because they have the appearance of a real firearm. There are no permits to lawfully own a gel blaster in NSW and they cannot be registered.
