A battery network will be established across inner Melbourne from next year in a pilot program designed to deliver more renewable energy to the grid and encourage the take-up of green power.

It is part of the municipality’s efforts to accelerate reductions in emissions and waste after the City of Melbourne declared a climate and biodiversity emergency in 2019. Environment Victoria campaigns manager Nicholas Aberle said household-level batteries typically stored about five to 10 kilowatts, while the Victorian government’sDr Aberle said mid-scale connected neighbourhood battery projects such as the City of Melbourne’s proposed five-megawatt network had “a really interesting role to play” in energy security.

The council’s environment portfolio chair, Rohan Leppert, said the scheme would provide valuable insights about the types and amounts of energy used in the inner city, which could help reform electricity networks to encourage more renewable energy consumption.
